Before we dive in, you should know that I’m a pizza snob. I’ve been eating pizza for half a century. I was born in New Jersey and grew up visiting family all around New York City, so I very much subscribe to the belief that the best pizza is New York pizza. I’m also a purist. Pizza is sauce, cheese, and crust. Maybe one “meat” topping. That’s it. So to me, there’s “pizza” and there’s “pizza with stuff on it,” and you should know where I’m coming from when you read my reviews.
Thankfully, vegan cheese has evolved considerably over the years, and you can absolutely get excellent vegan pizza in Asheville.
I’m not a complete stickler for only eating NY style pizza. Over the years, I’ve grown to appreciate Chicago style deep dish and Detroit style pizza too. Detroit style is rectangular, has a thick crust, and the cheese goes all the way to the crispy edges. It’s delicious when done well.
All that said, if a restaurant or food truck can make a traditional NY pizza, use 100 percent vegan ingredients, and do it really well, they’re going to get my business.
White Labs Brewing Company
White Labs, located in the South Slope neighborhood just south of downtown, is in our top tier for pizza. They’re a brewer and specialize in yeast making, so their pizza crust is outstanding. Like Pizza Finta, they have a high heat wood fired oven, and it really does the trick.
Our favorite pizza is the classic cheese, substituting their vegan cheese and homemade vegan Italian sausage. They also have an excellent white mushroom pizza (“The Funghi”) that they can veganize. The vegan Caesar salad is delicious. We haven’t tried the vegan double smash burger yet, but it looks amazing. It’s hard not to order the pizza though.
Pizza Finta
(Update: Reported closed 🙁 September 2026) Pizza Finta is 100 percent vegan and 100 percent awesome. Their sourdough crust is delightful, the sauce is flavorful, and the cheese has a great texture. This is also definitely in the top tier of vegan pizza in Asheville.
In addition to the classic pizza I love, they also make several red sauce and white sauce varieties. I just wish I could get it more often. They’re a pop-up vendor and are consistently stationed at the East Asheville Tailgate Market on Friday afternoons.
Paperhouse Pizza
Paperhouse Pizza is a food truck that rotates among several breweries in the Asheville area. Check their webpage or Instagram for their schedule, but in summer 2026, they were consistently at New Belgium on Wednesdays, Diatribe on Fridays, and then rotating on Saturdays between Turgua and Highland.
This is another pick high on our list because of their fresh ingredients and great texture and flavor. Recently, they added Be Hive vegan pepperoni to their menu, so we enjoyed a tasty vegan pepperoni pizza.
Asheville Brewing and Pizza
You can find Asheville Brewing and Pizza at two locations: downtown (South Slope) and in North Asheville. They offer several vegan “meat” toppings like veggie pepperoni, veggie chorizo, tofu, and curried tofu. They even have vegan pizza slices, which are rare to find in Asheville.
The other fun thing about them is that they’re also a movie theater. So you can eat your pizza, drink beer, and watch a movie, which is really cool.
Beer City Pizza
Beer City Pizza and Asheville Brewing and Pizza are two separate businesses now, but they used to be owned by the same people, so their vegan pizzas are still very similar. Beer City Pizza is in South Asheville and does not have seating. They’re take out and delivery only.
We really appreciate that Beer City Pizza has a cashew based vegan cheese, as well as vegan sausage and vegan pepperoni. If you like lots of toppings, they offer a specialty pizza called “Did I Mention I’m Vegan,” which comes with vegan pepperoni and sausage, red onion, green peppers, mushrooms, black olives, and vegan cheese.
Pi Squared Pizza
Pi Squared has Detroit style pizza, so it’s rather unique. They’re located in South Asheville and Arden and also have locations in Hendersonville and Spartanburg. It’s fun to eat their pizza because it’s different from everything else you can find in Asheville. They have the standard veggie toppings but no vegan “meat” options. One pro tip if you are ordering online for pick-up or delivery: order your pizza with Detroit-style crust and vegan cheese; however, you should make sure they don’t record your order as the “Detroiter”, which is a dairy cheese and animal-based pepperoni pizza.
Honorable Mentions
Blaze Pizza has a spicy vegan chorizo and can make their cheesy bread with vegan cheese. Even though it’s a chain, Blaze can be a solid choice and they are not expensive at all.
Mean Pies is a pop-up pizza shop only, and they don’t have vegan cheese. But they make a really good cheese-less pizza with great sauce and great crust, so if you see them, go support them.
